25 Laptop-friendly cafes to work in Chiang Mai (2025)

During our three months living in Chiang Mai as digital nomads, we faced a big challenge: finding the best cafรฉs to work from in a city packed with laptop-friendly spots.

With so many options, it was hard to know where to start without wasting time and money! To solve this problem, we decided to test as many cafรฉs as possibleโ€”sometimes even working from two or three in a single day.

After all this trial and error, weโ€™ve narrowed it down to what we believe are the 25 best cafรฉs in Chiang Mai for getting work done.

Whether youโ€™re a digital nomad, expat, or just someone in search of a productive workspace, this guide has you covered.

For each of the coffee shops, weโ€™ll share the wi-fi speed, opening hours, cost (based on the price of one latte), and a quick review of our experienceโ€”highlighting both the pros and cons to help you find your ideal cosy coffee corner in Chiang Mai.

Note: all Wi-Fi speeds recorded in this guide were tested using https://www.speedtest.net/, are in Mbps, using the 5GHz option if available, and are the nearest round number. If the Wi-Fi speed states โ€œN/Aโ€, it means that we didn’t get a chance to test it.

A little note about cafe etiquette

Before we start, we just want to go over some basics about etiquette when it comes to working in cafรฉs. At the end of the day, we want to make sure weโ€™re respectful of the space and remember that these cafรฉs are businesses, not coworking spaces.

With that in mind, here are our top tips for not overstaying your welcome in a cafรฉ:

  • Keep buying things: As a rule of thumb, we always try to buy something from the cafรฉ at least once every two hours. Think of it as your โ€œpaymentโ€ for using their space. Also, consider trying their higher-priced menu items to support their business.
  • Donโ€™t hog tables: If youโ€™re by yourself, thereโ€™s no reason to take a table meant for four peopleโ€”unless thereโ€™s literally no other option. Stick to tables that match your party size.
  • If it gets busy, get out: We get it, you were there first, but remember that the cafรฉ is a business. If youโ€™re taking up space and customers are walking away because thereโ€™s nowhere to sit, youโ€™re costing them money. We follow a simple rule: if there are at least two other available tables, we stay; if not, we pack up and leave.
  • Keep compact: Thereโ€™s no need to bring your entire desk setup with cables everywhere. Keep your gear and workspace as compact as possible.
  • Just be nice: Be friendly with the staff and treat them with respect. Say hello, ask how their day is going, and donโ€™t forget your pleases and thank-yous.
  • Ask about cafรฉ policies: Some spots might have time limits for how long you can work. Donโ€™t accidentally overstay your welcomeโ€”ask about their rules.

Best cafes to work in Chiang Mai Old City

1. Carrot Coffee

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡219 โฌ†247

๐Ÿ•‘: 8 AM to 5:30 PM daily

Carrot Coffee quickly became our favourite cafรฉ to work from in the Old City. Located by the south wall, it has a rustic charm with dรฉcor that leans into an โ€œunfinishedโ€ aesthetic.

A laptop propped up on stand with a mouse, keyboard and headphones connects on top of on of the Carrot Coffee wooden tables.
Getting stuck into some video editing in Carrot Coffee.

From our experience, the upstairs area felt like an unofficial โ€œcoworkingโ€ space, while the ground floor was more of a social spot for catching up over drinks. Upstairs, thereโ€™s a large communal tableโ€”perfect for group collaborationโ€”as well as several smaller tables. Plus, we noticed plenty of power outlets lining the walls, which is always a bonus for remote workers.

Whenever we needed a break from our screens, weโ€™d head downstairs to the little courtyard at the back of the cafรฉ for some fresh air. This small outdoor space was a game-changer for recharging and boosting productivity.

Carrot Coffeeโ€™s menu has all the classic drink options youโ€™d expect, plus a selection of fancier choices on their โ€œsignatureโ€ menu. They also serve up tasty brunch sandwiches throughout the day, making it a great spot for a working session with a bite to eat.

โœ… Positives:

  • On a super quiet road in the Old City.
  • Lots of space and seating.
  • We felt super welcomed and could spend all day there with no issues if not busy.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Doesnโ€™t offer more substantial food other than sandwiches.
  • Closes fairly early, not great for evening workers.

2. Into The Woods

๐Ÿ : 191 193 Prapokklao Road, Tambon Si Phum

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ80

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡16 โฌ†28

๐Ÿ•”: Tues-Sun: 9 AM to 6 PM

Moving from the south wall of the Old City to the north wall, Into The Woods is a cafรฉ that definitely stands out. Embracing a full-on witchy theme, the space is decked out with tree-shaped pillars, grand fairytale wall murals, and an array of witchy memorabilia scattered all over.

Sara out of focus while sipping on a juice while working on a laptop, with a clear view of the Into The Woods sign hanging on the wall behind her.
Into The Woods isn’t just a cafรฉ, it’s an experience.

We stopped by for lunch and were pleasantly surprised to find it super quiet, with only one other group inside. It had a peaceful atmosphere and some great table options for working, plus a few comfy armchairs if youโ€™re in the mood for a more relaxed session.

The menu at Into The Woods is surprisingly diverse, offering everything from breakfast sets to lunch options and dinner dishes. Some of their dinner items feature spaghetti based plates with a unique Thai twist. What really caught our eye, though, was the drinks menu, with sodas and smoothies named after fairy tales and fictional stories!

While it might not be the most popular cafรฉ for remote working in Chiang Mai, itโ€™s a fantastic choice if youโ€™re looking for a quieter spot to focus. We think itโ€™s definitely worth a visit!

โœ… Positives:

  • We loved the immersion of the decor into a fairytale world.
  • Could eat all three meals here and work all day.
  • Thereโ€™s a scale replica of Hogwarts.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Wi-Fi is too slow for heavy internet usage.
  • We didnโ€™t see manyโ€”if anyโ€”outlets around the cafรฉ.

3. Fern Forest Cafรฉ

๐Ÿ : 54, 1 Singharat Rd, Si Phum

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ85

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡50 โฌ†72

๐Ÿ•”: 8 AM to 7 PM daily

Fern Forest Cafe is super popular in Chiang Mai, but honestly, itโ€™s more of a dining spot than a work cafรฉ.

Several groups of people sitting around tables in a the garden of Fern Forest Cafรฉ. There are tons of trees, plants and bushes around with a view to the main building at the far end of the garden.
People enjoying their food inside Fern Forest Cafรฉ.

The outdoor seating in the โ€œfern forestโ€ area is absolutely stunning. Unfortunately for us, it was pretty packed when we showed up, so we ended up inside. The vibe indoors was nice thoughโ€”giving off a kind of โ€œEnglish breakfast teaโ€ energy with the decor.

The food here was delicious though! Theyโ€™ve got a big menu with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and desserts. I ordered a tuna sandwich, and Sara chose a breakfast set. Both were tasty, albeit a bit on the pricey side compared to other spots around town.

As for working, you can totally set up a laptop either inside or outside. We spotted a couple of people with laptops, but most of the crowd (like 85%) were there just to eat. One thing to keep in mind: there arenโ€™t a ton of outlets, especially inside, since most of the tables are free-standing in the middle of the room.

โœ… Positives:

  • Really high-quality and delicious food.
  • Great atmosphere for socialising if you want that.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Not the most productive environment for remote working.
  • Little options for using an outlet.
  • Probably not the best to work here between 12 PM and 2 PM.

4. Zohng Coffee

๐Ÿ : 58 Intrawarorot Road Soi 2, Tambon Si Phum

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ75

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡11 โฌ†13

๐Ÿ•”: 8 AM to 5:30 PM

Zohng Coffee is all about the inside-outside vibe, so if youโ€™re looking to escape the heat, this might not be your spot. That said, thereโ€™s plenty of seating both upstairs and downstairs, and it wasnโ€™t too crowded when we stopped by for lunch on a Sunday.

Sara smiling and working at her laptop with a latte at her side on a wooden bench out the front of Zohng Coffee with a view inside the shop.
Zohng Coffee’s ‘inside-outside’ concept in action.

What makes Zohng unique is that itโ€™s connected to some sort of accommodation out back. And for just เธฟ100, you can get access to their pool.

The menu sticks to breakfast and lunch, with brunch dishes and sandwiches being the main options. My shredded BBQ chicken toastie was great, and Saraโ€™s avocado on toast was a solid choice too.

Even on a Sunday, we werenโ€™t the only digital nomads working here. There were quite a few remote workers getting things done. This makes sense with the variety of seating optionsโ€”everything from proper tables to benches with stools. We found the Wi-Fi to be on the slower side, but the chill vibe and good food seem to keep people coming back!

โœ… Positives:

  • Great menu for brunch, we would happily go back.
  • Seems to be more of a working cafe, with lots of nomads here.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Itโ€™s not ideal if youโ€™re looking to escape the heat.
  • The internet speed is awful.
  • Closes pretty early, which isnโ€™t great for evening workers.

5. Chiang Mai Breakfast World

๐Ÿ : 24/1 เธ‹เธญเธข 1, Mun Mueang Rd

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ89

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡154 โฌ†148

๐Ÿ•”: Mon-Sat: 7 AM to 5 PM, Sun: 7 AM to 3 PM, Wed: Open to 10 PM

Chiang Mai Breakfast World (CMBW) was one of the spots we visited to try out as a breakfast spot in Chiang Mai. After testing the Wi-Fi, Sara and I both agreed that it would actually be a great place for digital nomads to work too!

Sara making a pose while sitting at a wooden table in the garden of Chiang Mai Breakfast World. There are two huge plates full of food on the table.
This was by far the most delicious breakfast spot in Chiang Mai.

When we walked into CMBW, we were greeted by a huge and beautiful outdoor seating area, surrounded by lush greenery. There were plenty of tables to choose from, and even a dude with a guitar playing some calming musicโ€”he was super talented!

For working, this isnโ€™t the kind of place youโ€™d spend the whole day at, but itโ€™s definitely a space where you could set up for a few hours. Charging your laptop might be a bit of a hassle, and the garden chairs could get uncomfortable after a while.

The breakfast menu is massiveโ€”English, American, German, Swissโ€”you name it! Plus, thereโ€™s a good mix of brunch, lunch, and dinner options too, including a German schnitzel. The English breakfast came with proper sausages tooโ€”not those tiny Thai wieners! That made me (Ryan) super happy.

โœ… Positives:

  • One of the highest quality breakfast foods we tried in Chiang Mai.
  • Great space with lots of nature to boost productivity.
  • Crazy fast Wi-Fi.

โŒ Negatives:

  • The menu is on the expensive side.
  • The furniture isnโ€™t really designed for remote working, so could get uncomfortable.
  • There are very few outlets around to charge equipment.

6. W8 Coffee

๐Ÿ : QXRV+4M2, Chang Moi Rd, Tambon Si Phum

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ60

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡145 โฌ†309

๐Ÿ•”: 9 AM to 8 PM daily (acc. to sign) or 9 AM to 6 PM daily (acc. to Google)

I canโ€™t exactly remember why, but we showed up at W8 thinking we could grab lunchโ€”which wasnโ€™t the case. It ended up being the first cafรฉ we visited during our mission to check out working spots that only offered drinks, not food. That said, The Bowl Spot is right next door and makes a great option if youโ€™re hungry!

Sara stirring her cafe latte on a huge wooden table while smiling at the camera. Behind her are a bunch of stairs leading to different levels of W8 Coffee in Chiang Mai.
The inside of W8 Coffee is kinda… convoluted.

Regardless, we really liked W8 for working. Theyโ€™ve got huge tables, so you can spread out without feeling like youโ€™re taking up too much space. The layout is pretty unique tooโ€”you walk upstairs to the coffee bar, then climb a bit more to the main working area, and then you can head down a different set of steps to a lower working space.

W8 has such a great vibe for getting stuff done. The big windows let in tons of natural light, itโ€™s super quiet, and there were heaps of other people working on laptops. The only downside we noticed was that the outlets are a bit scattered.

Oh, and bonusโ€”thereโ€™s a rooftop bar upstairs that opens in the evening and does serve food!

โœ… Positives:

  • Huge tables and great working area.
  • Rapid Wi-Fi speeds.
  • Pretty cheap on the grand scheme of things.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Would like to see some sort of food menu to be able to stay all day.
  • Comfier chairs wouldnโ€™t go amiss.

7. STORIES

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡70 โฌ†82

๐Ÿ•”: 7:30 AM to 9 PM

STORIES felt more like a restaurant than a cafรฉ, in our opinion. When we showed up at 1 pm on a Thursday, there wasnโ€™t a single person remote working. Instead, the place was packed with people enjoying lunch, so weโ€™d only suggest coming here outside of peak hours if youโ€™re planning to work.

Sara sitting at a table inside STORIES Cafe while holding an iced latte, and a sandwich on the table.
The food in STORIES was good! Just a bit expensive…

The tables were okay for laptop use, and the big windows surrounding the restaurant let in a decent amount of natural light. That said, the seats were a bit uncomfortable, and there werenโ€™t many outlets to plug into.

Where STORIES really shines is the food! Even though itโ€™s on the pricier side for Chiang Mai (เธฟ520 for two meals and a drink), we thoroughly enjoyed the club sandwich and grilled chicken burger.

Although, to be completely honest, we probably wouldnโ€™t come back here to work.

โœ… Positives:

  • Extensive food and drinks menu, even sells alcohol if youโ€™d like.
  • Half-decent Wi-Fi speeds.
  • Opening very early and closing very late.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Although STORIES allows remote working, the atmosphere doesnโ€™t reflect that.
  • In a popular area of town, so likely busy most of the time.
  • Kind of expensive.

8. The Bowl Spot

๐Ÿ : 299 Chang Moi, Mueang

๐Ÿ’ฐ: N/A

๐Ÿ›œ: N/A

๐Ÿ•”: 11 AM to 9:30 PM (9 PM on Thurs)

Okay, you rumbled us, The Bowl Spot isnโ€™t technically a cafรฉโ€”itโ€™s a restaurant. But we love this place so much, and youโ€™re 100% able to remote work from their spaces.

This is the first of two Bowl Spot locations featured in this guide, and itโ€™s their Old City property, which we only visited once (we hit up the Nimman branch at least 20 times). Itโ€™s perfect for grabbing a delicious yet healthy poke bowl for lunch while knocking out some work.

The Old City location is conveniently right next to W8 Coffee, so you could always work there and then escape to The Bowl Spot for a lunch break!

Neither location is usually super busy (though the Nimman one can get a little busier on Sundays), and the owners are incredibly friendly. They even gave us tips about places to check out around Chiang Mai! Plus, theyโ€™re totally cool with remote workers coming in, setting up, and grinding away while enjoying a fresh poke bowl.

Side note: We didnโ€™t check the Wi-Fi speed at the Old City branch, but the Nimman location has very fast internet. Also, we never got around to buying a latte here, so we donโ€™t have a price for that oneโ€ฆ

โœ… Positives:

  • Super friendly owners who are always up for a chat.
  • Fairly affordable and delicious food (เธฟ190 for the Super Bowl).
  • Offers a loyalty card to win free food items if you visit for lunch every dayโ€ฆ yeah, that was us.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Not a cafe, so it could get busy and you may have to leave.
  • Furniture isnโ€™t orientated towards remote workers.

9. The Hideout

๐Ÿ : 95/10 Sithiwongse Rd, Tambon Si Phum

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ75

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡22 โฌ†29

๐Ÿ•”: Tues-Sun: 8 AM to 3 PM

Initially, we didnโ€™t include The Hideout on the list of working cafรฉs we planned to visit, but we ended up here one Sunday for breakfastโ€”and honestly, it turned out to be a lovely little spot to spend a morning working.

Sara looking pleased with herself, sitting on a small wooden chair in the front garden of The Hideout. There are empty tables inside and a menu on the stand out the front.
We actually ended up moving inside because of rain…

The breakfast menu here is absolutely mouthwatering, with plenty of sweet, savoury, and sandwich options. The seating arrangements kind of gave me the vibe of a cozy cafรฉ back home in the UK, so realistically, thereโ€™s only space for one person to work at each table.

The Hideout definitely leans more toward being an eating cafรฉ than a working cafรฉ, so there werenโ€™t too many outlets around. But if youโ€™re looking for an early-morning spot to grab a scrumptious breakfast bagel and get a few hours of work done, this place is a great option!

โœ… Positives:

  • A super delicious brunch and breakfast menu.
  • Was very quiet at 9am on a Sunday.
  • Staff were super smiley and friendly.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Not ideal for longer work session.
  • We wouldnโ€™t suggest The Hideout for deep, focussed work.
  • Wi-Fi wouldnโ€™t support internet intensive work.

Best cafes to work in Nimman

10. On The Bread

๐Ÿ : 6 Siri Mangkalajarn Rd Lane 3, Tambon Su Thep

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ55

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡350 โฌ†394

๐Ÿ•”: Mon-Sat: 8 AM to 4 PM, Sun: 8 AM to 3 PM

On The Bread was one of the first cafรฉs we stopped by for lunch during our first time living in Chiang Mai. Itโ€™s a cosy little spot tucked away on a quiet back street in Nimman, and we ended up coming back multiple times.

Sara looking overly happy while working on her laptop at the breakfast bar out the front of On The Bread.
Sara looking a little too happy to start working…

We found the place has that charming โ€˜farmhouseโ€™ vibe, with a fresh bakery right next door. The cafรฉ itself is quite small, but it was never particularly busy whenever we visited, so it made for a great work spot. Plus, thereโ€™s a dedicated outlet at every table inside.

If you prefer some fresh air while working, we also worked at a small breakfast bar area out front. However, the furniture inside is fairly comfortable, and the quiet atmosphere is perfect for deep focus sessions.

But honestly, the main reason we kept returning to On The Bread was the set breakfast menus. Theyโ€™re crazy affordable, and the food is genuinely amazing. We could choose from a few options, all of which come with freshly baked bread, a hot drink, and a juice.

โœ… Positives:

  • Cosy farmhouse vibes make the cafe feel quite homely.
  • The Wi-Fi is probably one of the fastest out of any cafe in this guide.
  • Breakfast and lunch options are high quality, and inexpensive.

โŒ Negatives:

  • It is a small space, so if it does happen to get busy, youโ€™d need to leave.
  • Furniture isnโ€™t particularly โ€˜workingโ€™ standard, but it does the job.

11. Rosemary

๐Ÿ : 12 Siri Mangkalajarn Rd Lane 3, Tambon Su Thep

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ75

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡125 โฌ†119

๐Ÿ•”: 7 AM to 3 PM daily (kitchen closes at 2pm)

Just a few doors down from On The Bread, we found a quaint little cafรฉ called Rosemary. This space has a few tables available indoors, plus some extra tables in a โ€˜greenhouse-likeโ€™ area.

Honestly, weโ€™d recommend avoiding it if you plan to work around breakfast time (especially on a Sunday), as it can get super busy. The furniture is mainly wooden or metal, with sporadic cushions, so it might get pretty uncomfortable after a while.

But the food is amazing, with some really unique bread options like scrambled eggs in a hot dog bun or eggs benedict over a baguette.

โœ… Positives:

  • Delicious breakfast and brunch menu.
  • Unique greenhouse seating area.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Uncomfortable furniture.
  • Not a ton of outlets available.
  • Was super busy around 10am on a Sunday.

12. Stoic Cafe

๐Ÿ : 2 Soi 7, Suthep

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ80

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡145 โฌ†309

๐Ÿ•”: 9 AM to 10 PM daily

We donโ€™t think weโ€™d be too hard-pressed to say that Stoic has the best bagels in Chiang Maiโ€”weโ€™d love to hear your alternative options though! But in addition to the bagels, we found that Stoic has an awesome, brightly lit space and great Wi-Fi.

Working going about their business behind the counter at Stoic Cafe. There are empty tables around, a fridge full of drinks and plants dotted about the space.
This is roughly half of the seating inside Stoic.

The main downside, though, is that there isnโ€™t a ton of seating. When itโ€™s full, weโ€™d imagine that Stoic could probably only fit around 12 people inside. So if itโ€™s busy, it could be difficult to find a spot to sit.

However, the couple of times we visited were fairly early in the morning, and we never had issues finding somewhere to perch our bottoms.

โœ… Positives:

  • Best bagels in Chiang Mai, in our humble opinion.
  • Brightly lit space, great for productivity.
  • Open very late, great for evening workers.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Small cafe, with only limited seating available inside.
  • Can get busy.

13. The Barisotel

๐Ÿ : 7, 2 Nimmana Haeminda Rd Lane 9, Tambon Su Thep

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ85

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡318 โฌ†120

๐Ÿ•”: 8 AM to 6 PM daily

The Barisotel is a cafรฉ and restaurant thatโ€™s spread over two levels. We decided to sit at a table downstairs near the counter, and the natural light here was amazing. The huge windows at the front of the property, combined with the white decor, provided a bright atmosphere to work.

Two people working a table with an iPad, inside the brightly lit, white, and marble space of The Barisotel.
See what we mean about the brightness?!

Sara and I visited for lunch and a short work session around midday. At this time, there were a lot of other people working inside The Barisotel too, both upstairs and downstairs. We found the tables to be great for both individuals or groups looking to work together.

The menu is extensive, and we dived into a simple breakfast meal and a bacon and egg croissant. But we also noticed a lot of unique, signature drinks on the menu if youโ€™re looking for something a bit more quirky to fuel your work session.

โœ… Positives:

  • Big windows and white decor lends to a very bright workspace.
  • Food and drinks are delicious and the menu has lots of variety.
  • Amazing Wi-Fi.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Sporadic outlets, so not all tables have one.
  • The latte price is on the more expensive side.

14. Manifreshto

๐Ÿ : 14, 2 Nimmanahaeminda Road, Sutep

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ70

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡450 โฌ†450

๐Ÿ•”: 7:30 AM to 11 PM daily (acc. to sign), or until 12 PM (acc. to Google)

We actually really enjoyed working at Manifreshto and ended up returning multiple times.

Sara's hands reaching across the table towards a laptop and a coffee, with a fresh meal on a black plate beside it.
Manifreshto’s actually another great place for lunch or dinner!

Itโ€™s a cafรฉ-restaurant combination that offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. They use a โ€˜build your own mealโ€™ system, which means that when we arrived, the staff handed us a slip of paper and we had to check off the food and drinks we wanted.

Manifreshto also allows you to bring your own coffee, because they want you to โ€˜enjoy your time with usโ€™.

There is seating both inside (which is limited) and outside. We tried both arrangements and found ourselves working productively either wayโ€”although power outlets are scarce. But the biggest benefit is that Manifreshto has the fastest Wi-Fi connection weโ€™ve seen in any Chiang Mai cafรฉ.

โœ… Positives:

  • Literally the God of Wi-Fi in Chiang Mai cafรฉs, faster than most coworking spaces too.
  • Great menu options, the โ€˜build your own dishโ€™ style means it can be a cheap or as expensive as youโ€™d like.
  • Open late, very late, for people who are night owls.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Seating could be more comfortable, but itโ€™s not too bad.
  • Thereโ€™s only one of two options for outlets.

15. Groon

๐Ÿ : 6 Siri Mangkalajarn Rd Lane 7, Tambon Su Thep

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ85

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡30 โฌ†58

๐Ÿ•”: 8 AM to 5 PM daily (acc. to sign), or from 8:30 AM (acc. to Google)

Groon Bread & Brunch Cafรฉ was brought to our attention by our friends Dennis and Denise. When we searched for breakfast options in Chiang Mai, for some reason Groon never showed up!

The front exterior of the white Groon building with tables and chairs on the patio out front as the sun shines through the branches of a huge tree.
You can sit inside or outside!

Itโ€™s a funky looking, bright โ€˜Bali villa-styleโ€™ building, with plenty of seating inside and out the front. Its forte is definitely its brunch menu, and the โ€˜Bacon & Egg & Egg Egg Toastโ€™ is one of the best avocado on toast dishes Iโ€™ve ever eaten. Sara also praises the pancakes too!

In terms of working, we probably wouldnโ€™t recommend sticking around here all day, but itโ€™s a great spot for a few hours of work. Dennis and Denise would regularly come for breakfast and then stay a couple of hours to grind some client work.

Whenever we visited, there were always digital nomads sitting at laptops. This made sense to us as the food is great, the Wi-Fi was passable, and there were plenty of outlets around too.

At the end of your work session, you can even pick up a loaf of freshly baked bread too!

โœ… Positives:

  • The food at Groon is top-tier, if you donโ€™t work here, you need to at least eat here.
  • The space is bright, we find bright places better for productivity.
  • Some unique drink options, like an โ€˜Ocean Matchaโ€™.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Probably not ideal for setting up for a full days work.
  • Wi-Fi could be better for more internet-heavy tasks.

16. Roastniyom Coffee

๐Ÿ : 51 Siri Mangkalajarn Rd, Tambon Su Thep

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ70

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡32 โฌ†37

๐Ÿ•”: 7 AM to 8 PM daily (acc. to sign), or until 7 PM (acc. to Google)

This particular cafe was easy for us to find, because it was right outside of our apartment building! So it became Saraโ€™s go-to spot for her morning coffee.

Two people sitting at a table talking in the garden area of Roastniyom Coffee. There's a huge tree growing from the floor in front of the entrance.
The front garden of Roastniyom is actually kind of pleasant.

Being so close, we got to see Roastniyom Coffee in action a lot, and there are remote workers here at almost every hour of the day. In fact, weโ€™d even say that the clientele leaned heavily towards local Thai workers, rather than digital nomads or expats.

It offers just drinks and sweet treats, but it does have a โ€˜specialty menuโ€™ that includes drinks like a ‘Missy Berry’, a ‘Sub Ta Krai’, and a โ€˜Deep Blue Seaโ€™, among other options.

With inside and outside seating, there were usually a couple of tables free throughout the day. Although we never officially worked at Roastniyom, its popularity suggests a great working environment.

โœ… Positives:

  • Pretty much a โ€˜remote work cafeโ€™, not many people just stop here for a drink.
  • Fairly reasonable priced menu items.
  • Close to lots of restaurants and 7-Eleven.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Would love to see a small lunch menu.
  • The chairs and tables look a tad uncomfortable for long periods of time.

17. BeansLiquor

๐Ÿ : 14 Siri Mangkalajarn Rd, Tambon Su Thep

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ75

๐Ÿ•”: 8 AM to 11:30 PM daily (acc. to sign), or until 6:30 PM (acc. to Google)

BeansLiquor is a cosy cafรฉ just a short walk from our apartment in Chiang Mai. It was actually the first place we visited on our mission to find the best working cafรฉs in the city.

Two huge pieces of delicious looking stuffed toast inside a cardboard box, on top of a wooden table in BeansLiquor.
If we’re going to talk up the stuffed toast, it’s only right we show you!

With a full menu of food and drinks, Sara and I ended up coming back a few times because it was so convenient. We tried a couple of pasta dishesโ€”they were okay, but nothing special. The real standout was the thick, sweet, stuffed toast.

The cafรฉ is great for getting work done. Itโ€™s spread over three floors, but the second floor is the most productive. There are four big tables with outlets, and itโ€™s the only floor where the A/C was running.

While BeansLiquor isnโ€™t the most popular working cafรฉ in Chiang Mai, it gets a steady stream of customers. However, from our experience, thereโ€™s almost always a table free, even during busy hours.

โœ… Positives:

  • Huge tables that could fit six people around it comfortably, with tons of gear.
  • A breakfast and lunch menu, could stay here for hours.
  • Very good Wi-Fi.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Top floor isnโ€™t air-conditioned, itโ€™s super hot.
  • Some of the lunch menu is average at best.
  • Maybe on the odd day it gets busy and thereโ€™s none of the good tables left.

18. Ristr8to

๐Ÿ : 15/3 Nimmanahaeminda Road, Tambon Su Thep

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ88

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡114 โฌ†36

๐Ÿ•”: 7:08 AM to 6:08 PM daily (acc. to sign ๐Ÿ˜‚), or 7:30 AM to 6:30 PM (acc. to Google)

Ristr8to is a specialty coffee spot tucked away in a small property at the north end of Nimman Road. If you love coffee, youโ€™re going to love Ristr8to and its super unique coffee blends and drinks. If youโ€™re not a coffee lover (like me), the options are limitedโ€”Ristr8to doesnโ€™t have a food menu.

In terms of remote working, this cafรฉ generally isnโ€™t the best. The tables are small, there are only a few seating options, and space is limited. However, when we visited, there were quite a few digital nomads working away at their laptops.

Sara and I perched ourselves at a table in the front garden of Ristr8to. With a complete disregard to all the unique coffee options, Sara chose an iced latte, which she said was delicious. But we only stayed for about an hour before moving onโ€”mainly because there wasn’t any seating away from the sun.

โœ… Positives:

  • Amazing, fresh roasted coffee beans.
  • Interesting coffee drinks like โ€œSatan Latteโ€ and โ€œMocha el Freddoโ€.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Only a few tables availableโ€”maybe just 10.
  • Was quite busy in the early afternoon.
  • Their commitment to the bit leads to ambiguity about opening and closing times.

19. Roast8try Coffee

๐Ÿ : 24, 9 soi 17, Suthep

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ85

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡265 โฌ†183

๐Ÿ•”: 8 AM to 5 PM daily

Sara and I thought we might as well put the coffee shops with the most similar names next to each other on this list, for maximum confusion, lol.

Roast8ry Coffee is a coffee loverโ€™s dream. If youโ€™re a connoisseur of coffee, your taste buds are in for a treat! This coffee shop has a โ€˜luxuryโ€™ aestheticโ€”dark vibes, a monotone style, and large benches that lead to the best coffee experience.

A woman paying the staff at the black counter of Roast8try in Chiang Mai. There are a bunch of coffee utensils and equipment dotting the counter.
Roast8try just has that ‘specialty coffee vibe’.

We noticed that Roast8ry has won several coffee awards worldwide for both their coffees and their latte art (which you can choose for an extra เธฟ200). The menu itself is extensive; we saw a lot of coffee being served in unique glassesโ€”champagne flutes, martini glasses, etc.

Besides coffee, there was a healthy mix of digital nomads working here, as well as people just coming to socialise over a unique drink. The Wi-Fi is great, thereโ€™s free water in hidden compartments in the tables, and thereโ€™s seating both inside and out. However, the seating can get uncomfortable after a while.

โœ… Positives:

  • Your coffee experience here is probably going to be the best in Chiang Mai.
  • I genuinely canโ€™t think of another positive thatโ€™s not coffee orientated.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Furniture isnโ€™t ideal for longer working stints.
  • As natural light lovers, itโ€™s a bit dark for us to work.
  • Can get loud.

20. The Bowl Spot (again)

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡234 โฌ†196

๐Ÿ•”: 11 AM to 9:30 PM daily

This particular Bowl Spot was our โ€˜homegroundโ€™ branch. We would work at Life Space around the corner and then come here for lunch on a regular basis.

A huge poke bowl full of salmon, vegetables, and spicy mayo sauce, while wooden chopsticks are dripping mayo from above.
The Aloha Poke Bowl was Sara’s go-to!

The Nimman branch is essentially the same as the Old City branch, so Iโ€™ll skip most of the details. If I can offer a suggestion, I loved ordering a Super Bowl with brown rice, extra chicken, and spicy mayo, for me this was a winning combo!

We also made sure to grab a loyalty card. Every bowl you order wins a stamp, and we completed two cards. Along the way, you win free goodies up until the final prizeโ€”a free poke bowl!

โœ… Positives:

  • An affordable, healthy option for lunch or dinner.
  • Wi-Fi is actually really fast for working.
  • Loyalty card results in free goodies.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Same as the Old City branch, pretty much.

21. Cottontree

Cottontree is a small cafรฉ that we found a little ways north of Maya Mall. Sara and I rode the scooter there, arriving at a huge car park with sports halls around it. We thought weโ€™d arrived in the wrong place, but Cottontree serves as a break spot for a lot of sports players.

Sara working in the far corner of Cottontree cafe, while the worker goes about business behind the coffee bar. There are empty tables and plants around the coffee shop.
We shoved ourselves in the corner, can you spot Sara?

Itโ€™s a quaint little cafรฉ to work in, with a decent drinks menu and even bagels, sandwiches, and sweet treats for lunch. We set up our laptops in the corner, and there were a few other remote workers dotted around the space.

However, we noticed that all the outlets had been taped up, which makes us think they donโ€™t want people hanging around for too long. This might be because large groups of people regularly come in and out, before or after playing badminton in the halls. These groups can result in some significant noise too!

The staff were all super friendly, though! And if you need the loo, you need to ask the counter, and theyโ€™ll give you a key to the small toilet across the car park.

โœ… Positives:

  • Bagels and sandwiches make it a great option for a lunch visit.
  • If youโ€™re into badminton, this is your spot!

โŒ Negatives:

  • Cafe atmosphere promotes short stays.
  • Quite far out of the way fromโ€ฆ well anything.
  • Itโ€™s a small space, and large groups come in regularly.

22. BOB Coffee

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡28 โฌ†29

๐Ÿ•”: 8 AM to 6 PM daily

Buckle in, ladies and gents, because weโ€™ve reached our favourite cafรฉ for working in Chiang Mai! BOB Coffee is a fun establishment. The coffee counter is just off the main road, but the working area is through the car park and to the left. If you head right instead, thereโ€™s also a barโ€”we never used the bar.

BOB Coffee felt more like a coworking space to us than a cafรฉ. Literally everybody that walked through the door was here to work (apart from the occasional Thai girl who wanted IG photos). Each table is almost perfectly set up for work, with outlets and plenty of space.

Sara about to take a sip of coffee while working at her work desk setup on a table inside of BOB Coffee. There are other empty tables around, plants, and a door to the garden in the distance.
BOB Coffee was our fave!

Being around the back means that staff rarely pass through, so it never felt like we were overstaying our welcome. The cafรฉ space and the surrounding area are very aesthetic, a characteristic we regularly took advantage of to create content. If youโ€™re familiar with our โ€˜Nomad Advent Calendarโ€™ over on Instagram, three out of the four weeks were filmed at BOB, as well as several of our nomad interviews!

Something else that contributed to the coworking space feel was that it was almost the same people turning up to work at BOB every day. Sara and I made multiple digital nomad friends while working here, and many more acquaintances.

We found the drinks menu to be one of the most affordable in Chiang Mai, and the sweet treats were delicious. They embraced holiday vibes, with Halloween decorations when we first worked here, and Christmas decorations going up before we left Chiang Mai.

Finally, one of my core memories will be walking through the photo booth โ€˜shortcutโ€™ to reach the restrooms.

โœ… Positives:

  • A cafe that feels like a coworking space, no pressure to get out.
  • Affordable drinks, one of the cheapest lattes in Chiang Mai.
  • Beyond working at laptops, we could use the outside area to film content.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Would love to see some food options so we wouldn’t need to leave for lunch.
  • Faster Wi-Fi wouldnโ€™t go amiss, but it was workable.
  • Some days are busy, but it differs day to day.

23. Ombra Cafe

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡80 โฌ†1

๐Ÿ•”: 8 AM to 6 PM daily

Ombra Cafe is a spot we only visited once. Itโ€™s right on the border (at least, what we think is the border) between Nimman and Santitham. It has that cosy, darker vibe that some cafรฉs have, with seating both inside and outside.

Sara standing at the counter inside Ombra Coffee while inspecting the menu. There are other digital nomads sitting at tables and working.
Sara ordering us a couple of drinks at the counter… I can highly recommend the dragon fruit yogurt smoothie.

The menu here offers coffees, smoothies, specialty drinks, breakfast, and lunch items. Sara went for her usual iced latte, which she found below average, and I demolished a smoothie, which was above average.

There were a lot of people working at Ombra when we visited, probably thanks to the sign outside stating that itโ€™s โ€˜laptop-friendlyโ€™. However, like many small coffee shops in Chiang Mai, seating is fairly limited, especially inside.

Despite the upload speed being a bit strangeโ€”maybe it was a bad testโ€”Ombra is a perfectly okay cafรฉ to work in!

โœ… Positives:

  • The smoothies are actually gorgeous
  • They advertise as laptop-friendly
  • The specialty drinks look quite inviting

โŒ Negatives:

  • A small space means getting busy, quickly
  • Seating outside is beside a busy road
  • Upload speed is trying its best

24. Tora Bake

๐Ÿ : Chang Phueak, Mueang

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ60

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡83 โฌ†9

๐Ÿ•”: 9 AM to 6 PM daily

Tora Bake was a cafรฉ that we accidentally stumbled across while visiting all the coworking spaces in Chiang Mai. Itโ€™s attached to One Workspace and also acts as its reception.

Ryan in a state of deep focussed work on his laptop while sat at a small wooden table inside Tora Bake in Chiang Mai.
Sometimes Sara gets to take photos of me working too!

However, you can also just come here to visit Tora Bake. There are a couple of seating options, but it wasnโ€™t particularly busy when we visited around lunchtime.

If you buy a coffee or a homemade sweet treat, youโ€™ll receive a complimentary 1-hour pass to the Wi-Fi. For more, youโ€™ll need to purchase a day pass to One Workspace.

The vibe here was super relaxed, and the staff were incredibly friendly. If youโ€™re looking for a quick one-hour work session or an offline work session, Tora Bake is a cosy spot to do so!

โœ… Positives:

  • Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff.
  • Home-baked, fresh cakes and treats.
  • Also a coworking space.

โŒ Negatives:

  • Only get one hour Wi-Fi access.
  • No lunch menu, otherwise itโ€™d be a great lunch stop.
  • Upload speed is also trying its best.

Other great cafes to work in Chiang Mai

25. Artisan Cafe

๐Ÿ : 149, 153 Wua Lai Rd, Tambon Hai Ya

๐Ÿ’ฐ: เธฟ75

๐Ÿ›œ: โฌ‡280 โฌ†310

๐Ÿ•”: 8:30 AM to 5 PM daily

Artisan Cafe is a bit of an outlier on this list because itโ€™s a bit of an outlier in the city. Itโ€™s found a bit further south than the south wall of the Old City, but this location means that itโ€™s a quiet cafรฉโ€”very quiet.

Sara smiling at the camera while working on a laptop at a table with a freshly made cappuccino on it. She is inside Artisan Cafe, and the rest of the space is empty.
Sara looking super happy to working in Artisan!

We visited around late morning for brunch and a work session, and there was literally only one other customer using the space. For those looking for a peaceful atmosphere to get work done, Artisan Cafe is literally perfect.

Artisan has a sort of rustic, โ€˜mismatchedโ€™ furniture vibe, with plenty of variety when it comes to seating options. They offer drinks, sweet treats, breakfast, brunch, and lunch optionsโ€”everything you need to see you through until dinner!

Alongside this, rapid Wi-Fi speeds and tons of available outlets make us wish weโ€™d made the pilgrimage south to Artisan more often!

โœ… Positives:

  • A large space with plenty of seating inside and outside.
  • Very quiet, itโ€™ll probably never be truly busy.
  • Some of the best Wi-Fi speeds in the city.

โŒ Negatives:

  • In a less popular area of the city.
  • The bagels were out of stock when we visited (probably fixed by now).

Which cafรฉ in Chiang Mai was our favourite to work in?

Well, if youโ€™ve been concentrating while reading this article, itโ€™s not hard to guess which cafรฉ in Chiang Mai was our favourite to work in. Without a doubt, itโ€™s BOB Coffee. It was such a great spot for us that, towards the end of our stay in Chiang Mai, we were visiting practically every day!

Ryan and Sara taking a selfie and holding up a peace sign while working at their laptops inside of BOB Coffee.
By the end of our stay, you could find us here every day!

There was just something about the atmosphere at BOB that resonated with us. We always felt relaxed, not pressured to keep buying things (although we always did, see our cafรฉ etiquette suggestions), and it had a coworking feel.

When we inevitably end up back in Chiang Mai again sometime, weโ€™ll definitely be returning to BOB!

Some honourable mentions

Our initial plan was to visit 30 different cafรฉs in Chiang Mai for this guide, but as you can see, that didnโ€™t happenโ€”although we think 25 is pretty darn good!

So here are some honourable mentions that weโ€™ve heard are good for nomads to work in, but we havenโ€™t been able to confirm it ourselves:

The wooden front exterior of Wabi Sabi Coffee with empty seats out the front in Chiang Mai.
